How and Why Should I Keep My Dentures Clean?

In order to enjoy the benefits of your dentures for as long as possible, it’s important to care for them properly. All it takes are a few simple steps.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), 120 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth, and over 36 million are missing all of their teeth. As a result, dentures have become a common and valuable dental tool that helps people regain a full and confident smile.

But that doesn’t mean it’s a free pass to ignore or slack on dental hygiene. Just like with natural teeth, keeping your artificial teeth clean is an essential part of maintaining good oral health.

Why Is It Important To Keep Dentures Clean?

Dentures are not immune to the same staining and germ buildup that occurs with natural teeth. When they’re dirty, they become more susceptible to wear and damage, and you’ll end up needing to replace them far sooner than expected.

In addition, leaving dentures in your mouth for a long time can cause them to dry out. This affects their ability to retain shape, which can impact how securely and comfortably they fit on your gums.

What Happens if You Don’t Properly Take Care of Your Dentures?

Plaque, calculus, and biofilm can build up on dentures just like on natural teeth. If not cleaned properly, this can lead to oral health problems like:

  • Inflammation
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Oral thrush

You may also notice chronic gum irritation, difficulty eating or speaking, or visible deterioration of the denture material. If it’s been more than five years since you got your dentures, it’s a good idea to schedule a checkup to see if a replacement is needed.

Denture Cleaning 101

Just like your natural teeth, dentures need daily care. Aim to clean them at least once a day—especially after meals and before bed. Here’s how to do it:

Rinse. Remove your dentures and gently rinse with cool or lukewarm water to remove food particles. Avoid hot or boiling water, which can warp the shape.

Clean your mouth. Brush your tongue, cheeks, any remaining teeth, and the roof of your mouth. Remove any leftover adhesive if used.

Brush the dentures. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive denture cleaner, gently scrub all surfaces of the dentures.

Soak overnight. Let your gums rest by removing your dentures before bed and soaking them in an ADA-approved cleaning solution. Always rinse thoroughly before wearing them again.

Schedule regular dental checkups. Even if you wear full dentures, regular dentist visits are crucial for oral health evaluations and professional cleanings.
