Can I Get an Allergic Reaction to Invisalign?

An allergic reaction to Invisalign is extremely rare and doesn’t mean you need to avoid or stop the treatment.

Invisalign has helped millions of people discreetly straighten their teeth without the look and feel of traditional metal braces. Made of clear plastic, Invisalign trays gently push misaligned or crowded teeth into place. For mild to moderate spacing and bite issues, Invisalign is just as effective as wire braces—with added comfort and aesthetics.

So, can you be allergic to Invisalign? The short answer: it’s very rare, but not impossible.

Allergies and Invisalign

Invisalign aligners are made from SmartTrack®, a thermoplastic material that is FDA-approved, BPA-free, and contains no latex or gluten. It’s designed to be safe and comfortable for long-term use.

Still, a very small number of people with plastic sensitivities may experience a mild reaction. If you’re unsure whether you may be sensitive, try taping a small piece of plastic to your arm for a day or two and monitor your skin’s response. As always, check with your dentist first.

Signs of a Mild or Severe Reaction

In the rare event of an allergic reaction, symptoms may include:

  • Mild itching on the gums, tongue, or roof of the mouth
  • Increased sensitivity or dryness
  • In very rare cases: swelling, shortness of breath, or a burning sensation in the mouth

If removing your aligners makes these symptoms disappear, it’s worth consulting your dentist to rule out an allergy or other oral sensitivity.

What to Do if You Experience Symptoms

You likely don’t need to stop Invisalign treatment entirely. Many mild symptoms can be managed safely under your dentist’s care. Here are a few ways to reduce discomfort and potential irritation:

Drinking Cold Water

Wearing aligners can dry out your mouth and reduce saliva production, leading to sensitivity. Stay hydrated and drink cold water throughout the day to promote comfort.

Frequent Dental Cleanings

Consider getting cleanings every three months instead of every six. Your dentist can monitor any irritation and help reduce symptoms through added care or saliva-promoting treatments.

Keeping Your Trays Clean

Sometimes, reactions aren’t caused by the plastic itself but by trapped food particles. Rinse your aligners after meals, and soak them regularly in a mix of baking soda and water to keep them clean and free of potential allergens.
