Dental implants are a modern solution to fix tooth loss. As with most procedures, dental implants come with some small risks, but the benefits far outweigh them.
Dental implants aren’t a new invention. In fact, the earliest known example dates back to around 1000 BC, when a copper peg was discovered in the jawbone of an Egyptian king. While we’re not sure whether that early implant was placed before or after death, one thing is clear: dental implants have come a long way.
Today, dental implants are one of the most effective and durable solutions for replacing missing teeth. And while the process involves oral surgery, Espire Dental has safely performed countless implant procedures—and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
What Are Dental Implants, and Are They Right for Me?
Dental implants are placed in a multi-step process:
- The damaged tooth and root are removed.
- After healing, a titanium post is inserted into the jawbone.
- Over the next 6–12 weeks, the bone fuses with the post in a process called osseointegration.
- Once fused, a connector post (abutment) is added.
- A custom crown is then attached that matches the color and shape of your natural teeth.
Common Questions to Ask Your Dentist
Am I a good candidate for implants?
Most patients qualify for dental implants as long as they have healthy gums and enough jawbone to support the implant. If bone mass is lacking, your dentist can perform a bone graft. Chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease won’t necessarily disqualify you, but they’ll need to be evaluated. Smokers may still qualify—but quitting is essential before surgery.
Are there risks involved?
Like any surgery, implants come with minor risks: infection, implant failure, nerve damage, or sinus complications (for upper jaw implants). Fortunately, these complications are rare. Good oral hygiene and post-op care significantly improve your success rate.
Is it painful?
You’ll be given local anesthesia, so the procedure itself is not painful—no more uncomfortable than a typical extraction.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
- Implants are permanent and function like real teeth
- No slipping, clicking, or adhesives like with dentures
- They preserve jawbone health and facial structure
- With proper care, they can last a lifetime
What if the implant fails?
Although rare, implant failure can happen. If so, your dentist will explore the best next step—whether it’s another implant or an alternative like dentures or a bridge.
