What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any oral health problem that requires immediate attention to relieve pain, prevent further damage, or save a tooth. If you’re experiencing any of the following, contact our office right away for emergency care:

  • Severe Toothache: Sudden or sharp pain that won’t go away, especially if it interferes with eating or sleeping.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth has been knocked out due to injury, quick action can increase the chances of saving the tooth.
  • Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth: Damage to a tooth from trauma or biting something hard can cause pain and lead to further issues if not treated promptly.
  • Lost Filling or Crown: A lost filling or crown can leave your tooth exposed to decay and infection.
  • Abscess or Swelling: An abscess is a serious infection that can cause severe pain, swelling, and even fever. It requires immediate treatment to prevent the infection from spreading.
  • Injury to the Gums, Tongue, or Mouth: Any cuts, bleeding, or trauma to the soft tissues of the mouth should be addressed by a dentist as soon as possible.

If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, it’s always better to give us a call. Our team is here to help you determine the best course of action and ensure you receive prompt care.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies can be stressful, but taking quick action can help minimize damage and reduce pain. Here’s what to do in common dental emergencies before you can get to Espire Dental:

  • Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth has been knocked out, try to place it back in its socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, keep the tooth moist in a container of milk or saliva and bring it with you to our office immediately. Time is critical, and getting to our office within 30-60 minutes increases the chances of saving the tooth.
  • Chipped or Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Bring any tooth fragments with you to the office.
  • Severe Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss around the affected tooth to remove any debris. Avoid applying aspirin directly to the tooth, as this can cause irritation.
  • Abscess: If you notice a pimple-like swelling on your gums, rinse with salt water and contact us right away. Abscesses are serious infections that require immediate treatment.

ESPIRE CARE PLAN
For patients without Dental Insurance, Espire Dental offers our Espire Care Plan, our dental savings plan that will help you eliminate insurance worries and maximize your savings.

If you have a dental emergency after hours, call our office number. We have an emergency line for after-hours assistance, and we’ll make sure you receive care as soon as possible.

While the ER can provide pain relief and antibiotics, they won’t be able to perform dental procedures. It’s best to contact a dentist as soon as possible to address the root cause of your dental emergency.

We prioritize emergency cases and offer same-day appointments to address your issue as quickly as possible. Call our office, and we’ll do our best to see you right away.

Bring any tooth fragments or knocked-out teeth with you, as well as information about your medical and dental history. If you’re taking any medications, let us know during your visit.

We understand that dental emergencies can be stressful. We offer sedation options to help you relax during your treatment and ensure that your experience is as comfortable as possible.

In many cases, a broken tooth can be repaired in one visit using bonding, fillings, or a temporary crown. If more extensive work is needed, we’ll provide immediate relief and schedule follow-up treatment as needed.
